Willingdon Councillor Andy Watkins has described the new stiles on the 1066 walk as fortifications that could well have defeated the Normans.

He said "I have been asking for the last ten years for the rickety old stiles to be replaced by kissing gates as that would be a lot easier for the many elderly residents who use the walk across Mornings Mill Farm. However, these requests have been totally ignored by the County Council and they have gone for really strong and high fortifications which could well have saved the day for King Harold."

He added "Local Councils should be encouraging residents to walk in the countryside and not make it more difficult. I have asked the County and District Councils to look properly at what they can do to make these walks more accessible to all."
