Commenting on the news that the Government has agreed in principle to approve a new generation of nuclear power stations, Liberal Democrat parliamentary campaigner, Stephen Lloyd, said: "This is a flawed decision based on a sham consultation. There is a real risk that focusing on new nuclear plants will undermine attempts to find a cleaner, greener, more sustainable and secure solution.

"Ministers should be promoting and supporting carbon capture and storage as a safe, secure and flexible way of plugging the energy gap.

"The Conservatives apparent nuclear doubts have also now evaporated as they've joined the government in backing the case for nuclear power.

Lloyd added: "At a recent Question Time event hosted by Eastbourne Greenpeace, our MP Nigel Waterson made great play about how the Conservatives have changed their ways and are now committed to the Green agenda. Their shameful decision to back the government on nuclear power shows this to be false and that now the only major political party opposed to the building of new nuclear power stations in the UK is the Liberal Democrats.
