LLOYD BACKS FSB 'KEEP TRADE LOCAL' CAMPAIGN12.00.00am GMT Sat 15th Mar 2008
The FSB (Federation of Small Business) has launched this week a national campaign in support of local traders and businesses. In Eastbourne, Liberal Democrat parliamentary campaigner Stephen Lloyd, is backing the initiative. He said: "I support the FSB 'Keep Trade Local' campaign wholeheartedly. It is absolutely vital for the long-term future of Eastbourne that we all do what we can to support our own independent shops and businesses. I remember a few years ago being the first to come out fighting against the proposed B&Q megastore in Sovereign Harbour. Some people told me then that we couldn't win against such a corporate giant but with the help of many people from the Harbour and other residents we showed it could be done. This 'Keep Trade Local ' campaign is the same principle. It's about us all standing up for what is good for the whole community". Mr Derek Baxter, owner of the popular appliance shop in Seaside, DB Domestics, added: "When Stephen told me of the FSB's campaign to 'Keep Trade Local', I was very happy to offer my support. We've been in business in Eastbourne for 27 years. DB Domestics is a real family firm and we're proud of our success. It's all down to our customers though and many of them have been with us loyally for years. They keep coming back because they know and trust us which is just one of the advantages of local shops. We have the time to build up a relationship with our customers and because, like other independent traders across Eastbourne we're in the middle of the community, people get to know us personally." "It's been tragic to see so many small, local shops closing over the years as the supermarkets drag business away. Anything that will stop that and, who knows, even reverse it is good enough for me. Eastbourne is a really great place to live. One of its strengths is the sense of community, and I seriously believe that local shops play a crucial role." Lloyd said: "Small businesses are the lifeblood not just of Eastbourne but Great Britain plc and I am a passionate supporter both professionally and politically. It's tough running a small business at the best of times and they need all the support we can give them. The FSB 'Keep Trade Local' campaign reminds us that we also have a key part to play and can do so by making that little bit of extra effort to support independent traders across Eastbourne when we can." "Mr Baxter runs a business that is a perfect example of how a well-run independent trader can still win against the hypermarket and out of town superstores. Good quality, keen pricing and best of all - local."
